Notes

One of the things I've been seeing new Notion users complain about - something I've also seen on Twitter - is that for quick notes Notion can be overwhelming and that a note should be different from a full document or page. I've found myself wanting to take a quick note on Notion and not knowing where to put it without it getting lost in a collection of pages and documents where I don't have the easy access I'd have in a notes app.

This is how I imagine Notes would work: you have a panel accessible from any page on Notion, so you can quickly check on short content or take a note that doesn't deserve a page itself. Shortly put, it's a panel where a new note can be created without the user having to leave the page where they are working and is still able to go back to it later.

Then there's the option to see all the notes on a separate page, where they're all collected and can be organized later. If needed, they can also be turned into full pages later.

Formatting bar

The sections above show a peek of a Script page with different formatting, as well as a bar below the title of the pages. This is part of the implementation that provides improved usability and experience for filmmakers. Those new formats are expanded on a different page; for now, I am going to focus on the formatting bar.

This is a personal issue I've had with Notion and don't know how much other people face it too, but when trying to format text I always find myself fighting against the floating formatting menu. I attempt to solve this by having an optional permanent bar (meaning the floating bar doesn't disappear, the user can decide which one to use) that includes those formatting options while still taking advantage of the space to include other options like filtering, searching, viewing options, and even some new elements such as page information at a glance.

These bars could be different depending on the document, and could be customized depending on what the user wants to see.

Another thing: would the bar work better in-between the page title and the content, or above the title? This is something I'd love to discuss. Below is an example of how it'd look like above the title, using the Directory format from 5. An interactive directory with roles
